The Mission of KyEHC is: To provide humane treatment and shelter while working as a clearinghouse to seek adoptive homes for all of Kentucky's unwanted equines, regardless of breed; To educate the public and raise awareness for responsible equine ownership so that fewer horses end up in crisis; To work with and serve as a model for organizations with the same mission in other states: to save America's equines from inhumane treatment.

Hands-On Education Offered for New Horse Owners in Central Kentucky
On April 3, 2010 the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) is conducting a full day hands-on training for horse interested adults and new horse owners. The first of a two part series, Horse Handling Basics combines classroom instruction with hands-on activities to teach safe handling skills to those who are new to horses, or just interested in learning more about horses.
The session begins with information about horse behavior and safety. Participants progress throughout the day with each topic building upon the knowledge and skills learned earlier. By the completion of the workshop all attendees will have learned basic anatomy, equine behavior, and safety. All will have the opportunity to approach and handle horses and learn to halter, lead, and groom.
"Horse Handling Basics provides a foundation for additional activities involving horses, which may eventually include riding and/or ownership. The skills taught in this training are used by horse owners every day," commented KHC Board President Madelyn Millard. "Our goal is to encourage new and potential horse owners to recognize available resources and work with professionals especially when acquiring a first horse."
Instruction is provided by Essie Rogers, KHC Director of Education, a certified riding instructor through the Certified Horsemanship Association. In 2009 Rogers was instrumental in creating the award-winning new horse owner DVD HorseSmarts: Essential Advice for Today's Horse Owner.
Cost for the training is $35 and includes lunch. Horse Handling Basics will be offered at the Kentucky Equine Humane Center in Nicholasville, Kentucky on Saturday, April 3, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Pre-registration is required.

KyEHC Partnership with Kentucky Horse Park
Brings Awareness of Impact the Economic Crisis
Having on Horse Owners of All Breeds
New Horse Park Residents Link Past and Present
Lexington Herald-Leader by Janet Patton (jpatton1@herald-leader.com)
LEXINGTON, KY (January 11, 2010) – Rafiq, a black stallion, and Shazray Moonbeam, a black mare, are themselves a kind of gift.
They were adopted by the horse park after their former owner called the
Kentucky Equine Humane Center for help in finding them a new home.
The horse park has made it part of its mission to educate the public
about the economic stress horse owners of all kinds are facing and to
help at-risk horses whenever it can.
"The travesty of this crisis is that thousands of good horses are coming to the end of the line prematurely and will never reach the fullness of their life's purpose unless more people get involved in their rescue," said John Nicholson, executive director of the horse park. "The Arabian horse has been highly prized by many cultures throughout history, but in spite of that, like so many other breeds, scores of them are fighting for survival in perilous situations."....
