Take the Reins is an education initiative where local schools pair with the Kentucky Equine Humane Center to foster a horse & supplement core curriculum.

Landsdowne Summer Camp & Take the Reins Program

Take the Reins is a new initiative introduced by the Kentucky Equine Humane Center. This project pairs local elementary schools with The Center, creating a program that supplements core curriculum while also enhancing learning outcomes such as responsibility, care, and the importance of giving back. Each school participating in the Take the Reins program will “foster” a horse from The Center for one school year. The fostered horse will serve as the cornerstone for the school’s curriculum and engagement with The Center.

For the 2017-2018 school year, we have partnered with Lansdowne Elementary, Ashland Elementary and Christ the King Elementary schools. Each school has had a couple field trips here to the center and also to Alltech.  Each school has had visiting speakers and presentations done at school as well.

Many thanks to Alltech for their video production of Take The Reins field trip to Alltech and the Kentucky Equine Humane Center! At Altech, Julius Marks Elementary students learned about nutrition, got to weigh a horse and hay, and at KyEHC, they got to meet Patrick's Bullseye, the horse that they are supporting through this program! An Education Initiative

We were excited to have the Landsdowne Elementary Summer Program kids out for a field trip to the center. They had a great time and the Herald Leader was gracious enough to come out and get some great coverage of the kids interacting with our horses.

We are super excited to be starting the new school year off with three new schools in our Take the Reins Program, Sponsored by Alltech, with Ashland Elementary, Lansdowne Elementary, and Christ The King Elementary. Those schools will be taking several field trips here to the center and also to Alltech, along with incorporating an equine related curriculum into their everyday studies and also each school will be "fostering" one of our equines here at the center for the school year.
